Is it possible to get good investment returns while also helping to protect the environment? We bring Tim Nash, from GoodInvesting.com, on the show to discuss all things ESG. Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) is becoming more popular for those wanting to make more socially and environmentally responsible investment decisions. We drink a Raspberry Wheat Ale from Phillips Brewing and Malting Co kindly purchased for us by Justin. Here in the FI Garage, we’re all on the path to FI, however, we consider the RE part optional. #FIRE

Interesting discussion, with lots of nuance for personalization of investing impact. After listening, I was looking at my Interactive Brokers account client portal. In the portfolio view there is a tab for “Impact Dashboard”, that lets you select your preferences (Values you support and practices you avoid), and then rates your holdings based on those preferences.
I thought this was a cool feature. There seems to be a bit of a shortcoming as it doesn’t yet seem to rate any of my (3) ETF holdings though….just the direct stock holdings. Do any other Canadian brokers have this feature?
Good question. As far as I know Wealthsimple offers their ‘green’ investment option, but I don’t think Questrade as create a filter for sustainable attributes yet. We’ll have to poll the community and see if other brokers are offering the option.
Really learned a lot on this episode and Tim is a compelling speaker.
The idea that an ordinary 100k stock portfolio could be the biggest part an individual’s carbon footprint was striking. Anyone have a link to the study?
New listener! Thanks for providing this podcast.
He FI computer Scientist,
Glad you found our show! Tim was an interesting guest, I don’t spend a lot of time looking into the sustainable side of investing, but there’s definitely some considerations there moving forward. Good questions about the study. Maybe reach out to Tim at nash@sustainableeconomist.com and ask him. Let us know if you have any future episode suggestions! Cheers, MM
